Most visual images I see trying to persuade an individual to a purchase/commit are focused primarily towards guys. Lately, I’ve noticed ads and commercials for muscle building stimulates (promoted by massive men with attractive women all over them), action movies (promoted by killing, blowing stuff up, and a beautiful woman who needs help), and NFL programs (promoted by beer and cheerleaders on the sidelines).
These various commercials and ads lead me to believe that “sex sells”. Behind this alliteration lies some truth. Most of the market today is targeted towards the male population because historically males make higher wages than women, and what better way to get into a typical man’s head (and wallet) than alcohol, sports, and women? Another example to further my argument is the commercial for the “Axe Detailer”; a cleaning utensil produced by Axe advertised by attractive women for the purpose of “male cleanliness”. This product is strictly for males; however it is marketed by women. I thought that these constant sex sightings were because I watch primarily male networks; however when I turned the TV to the ‘WE’ network (Women’s Entertainment) after five minutes a commercial, advertising make up, was shown. The spokesperson was another attractive woman wearing thin, partially translucent, clothing. Although I’m sure the target audience is not men in these commercials - the theme is still ‘sex’.
I think that this form of advertisement is very effective considering the point of advertising is to gain the target audiences attention. Some might say that this type of advertisement is considered crude but the truth is that it obviously must make money because it’s used by both genders and in some way, shape, or form on nearly every product.
I believe the world we live in today; an attractive person must be used to advertise a product. How well would a product sell if an ‘unattractive’ woman were used to market the product? Most likely the advertisement would be ineffective merely because it doesn’t please the consumer. This blogging assignment has lead me to believe that the marketing world is dependent upon the sex drive of humanity and (based on commercials shown presently) will not change in the near future.
